Vonnegut Warrior Writing Workshop
Feb
25
12:00 PM12:00

Vonnegut Warrior Writing Workshop

The National Veterans Art Museum is proud to partner with Warrior Writers to host Truth-Telling the Vonnegut Way, a writing workshop in conjunction with Vonnegut’s Odyssey, an art exhibition that explores connections between the timeless and universal story of veterans’ return from combat and the artwork of World War II veteran and famed author Kurt Vonnegut Jr.

Kurt Vonnegut Jr. used elements of sci-fi, the fantastic, and meta-fiction to write about his experience as a P.O.W. in World War II. What role can fiction play in our present culture of "post-truth," where facts so regularly get blended with the imaginary? This workshop will look at Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five as a form of truth-telling, with exercises to help participants write their own military experiences. Veterans of any era, service members, and community members who are interested in using writing as a tool for expression and transformation are welcome. We recommend everyone come with at least one other person you feel supported by and comfortable working with. It would also be beneficial to read Slaughterhouse-Five before the workshop, though it's not required.

The workshop will be led by Warrior Writers facilitator and editor Kevin Basl. Kevin served in the Army and deployed to Iraq twice as a mobile radar operator. He started working with Warrior Writers in 2012 and became a Warrior Writers facilitator in 2013. Warrior Writers' mission is to create a culture in which veterans and service members speak openly and honestly about their military experiences. In the form of veteran-focused writing and art-making workshops, we provide a creative community for self-expression and reflection, while also fostering mutual understanding and peer-to-peer support.
Light refreshments will be provided.

Space is limited, register here
