America's Sweetheart stars in this powerful melodrama playing a dual role, one of Miss Stella Maris - a young girl from a well-to-do family who has been crippled since birth, and shielded through the years from the unpleasantness and reality of the world by her guardian aunt and uncle. Unity Blake - also played by Pickford, is a plain-Jane servant orphan girl adopted by John Risco (Conway Tearle), and eventually falls in love with him despite their significant age difference. Meanwhile, Stella undergoes a successful operation, and after years of therapy can finally walk. Her new freedom gives her the opportunity to discover things she never imagined before, including a fulsome affection for John.
