JOIN STUDENTS AND STAFF FROM PORTAGE PARK SCHOOL TO HONOR OUR SOLDIERS

Flowers for Soldiers is held annually around the time of Memorial Day.  It is a ceremony to honor the military at the site of a memorial tree at the northeast corner of Portage Park, near Berteau and Long.  The program was originally started over 60 years ago by the Portage Park Women's Club.  It will be held at 9:30 AM on Friday, May 25, 2018.  Grade K-2 students from Portage Park School will perform patriotic songs and lay flowers at the base of the tree.  The PPS Wind Ensemble and Concert Band will perform the Star Spangled Banner and America the Beautiful. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held in the school auditorium.  The school is located at 5330 W. Berteau Ave. The public is welcome to attend, rain or shine.

Filament's sensory-friendly performances are designed to create a performing arts experience that is welcoming to all families with children with autism or with other disabilities that create sensory sensitivities.

6TH ANNUAL BOB DYLAN BIRTHDAY BASH AND BENEFIT CONCERT

Join Filament Theatre for the sixth annual Bob Dylan Birthday Bash as ten musical acts swap songs and stories of the legendary Bob Dylan. Proceeds from this board sponsored event will benefit Filament Theatre's arts and education programs. The musicians featured at this event inlcude:  Los Cool Shades; Robin and Jenny Bienemann; Dave and Jodi Walker; Naomi Ashley; Robin, Jenny, Jodi, Dave, Naomi; Tom Henniger and Sam Barzano; Tory Lopez; Rachel Drew and Gerald Dowd; Ary Jeebie and Ellis Clark; and Rob and the Representatives.
Additionally, there will be a Raffle, Silent Auction, Cash Bar, VIP Tables, Birthday Cake!

Artifacts, explores the material and speculative objects that hold personal, cultural, and political import for those directly and indirectly impacted by war.

The exhibition features The Invisible Enemy Should Not Exist by internationally celebrated artist Michael Rakowitz; Exit Wounds and What We Carried by the award winning photographer Jim Lommasson; Battle Beyond the Battlefield by former Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellow and veteran artist Alicia Dietz; Sum of My Father by former de Young Fine Arts Museum Resident and veteran artist Rodney Ewing; The Shrapnel Project by Purple Heart recipient and artist Phillip Schladweiler; and the award winning Combat Paper by veteran artist Drew Cameron.

Bringing together photography, sculpture, and installation, the artworks in Artifacts serve to expand the definition of “artifact” and examine the ways in which collected objects hold meaning and significance for people, societies, and history impacted by war.

IRVING PARK COMMUNITY FOOD PANTRY WALK THROUGH OLD IRVING PARK

The Irving Park Community Food Pantry is organizing a walk through the Old Irving Park neighborhood, in the vicinity of the Pantry. The goal is to raise funds for the Pantry and generate awareness for the Pantry’s efforts in our community.

The walk will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 19th. Attendees will begin to assemble for the walk at 8:15. A route of about 1.7 miles through the neighborhood has been mapped out and approved by the city. It should take about 30 to 40 minutes to complete the route. The goal of the walk is to raise awareness about food insecurity in Irving Park. The Pantry will ask walkers to ask their friends for donations. They also can bring food donations, as well as socks or toiletries to add to the pantry’s stocks for clients. School and church groups are encouraged to gather to walk together. Students can earn 2 hours of service time for participating.

ONCE IN A LIFE TIME: JUDY AND LIZA AT THE LONDON PALLADIUM

The Irving Park Fine Arts Committee is pleased to present “Once In A Lifetime: Judy & Liza at the London Palladium" on May 12th at 7 pm at the Irish American Heritage Center. The concert is a tribute to Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli’s one-and-only performance together, which took place in 1964 at the London Palladium. The concert stars Nancy Hays as Judy Garland and Alexa Castelvecchi as Liza Minnelli. A trio led by Robert Ollis will accompany the singers.

Tickets for the concert are $25 in advance and $35 at the door for general admission, which includes light appetizers and a cash bar. VIP tickets are $50 and include premium reserved seating, appetizers and one drink.

Join the Six Corners Association for our next Social After 6: Suds After 6! Join us for a fun night filled with soap making demonstrations at Distinct Bath & Body and wine and cider tastings at the Fischman's Bottle Shop!

Two demonstrations and tasting times will be available. Attendees can purchase ticket to select which activity they would like to take part in first.

Soap Demonstration 1: 6:30 pm: Followed by wine and cider tastings at Fischman’s Bottle Shop.

Soap Demonstration 2: 7:30 pm: Wine and cider tastings will be done beforehand at Fischman's Bottle Shop.

Appetizers will be available during the wine and cider tastings. After the soap demonstration, attendees will receive a soap from Distinct Bath & Body!

Josi's Frozen Yogurt Cafe will be giving away mini cones during the soap making demonstration.

Admission is $15! No tickets will be sold at the door.

Join the Northwest Side Housing Center and the Active Transportation Alliance on Saturday, May 5th for a bike ride in Belmont-Cragin! This will be a 7 mile, no-drop ride.

We hope to bring attention to the need for additional biking infrastructure in this part of Chicago as well as the need for upkeep of existing infrastructure.

With additional infrastructure, more people will be encouraged to ride their bikes for transportation and recreation leading to a healthier, safer, and more equitable community.
